Season and Costs

The club runs through the badminton season, from September through to the end of May, with breaks for school holidays.  Membership fees, currently £35/term, are paid in advance, at the start of each term.  Visitor/potential member’s fees will be notified, and are refundable on joining.

Coaches

The club has regular qualified adult coaches with support from some of the junior members who have taken their initial coaching qualifications.  The main coaches are:

  • Alex. Fenton: Level 2 coach who has coached at Southwell for the last 15 years and played for 25+ years in competitive league  matches.

  • Kevin Langley: A Level 2 coach with great experience.  He worked with the Lincolnshire junior county squad players, coaching from Under 11 up to Under 17 age groups and was the team manager at the annual ICT tournament, held at Nottingham University, for three years.  A senior county player whilst living in Lincolnshire, he now lives in Notts and plays for our Over 40’s Vets. team as well as for Byron in the Notts Senior League.  Kevin has represented Great Britain’s ‘Railways’ team for 16 years in tournaments around the world.

  •  Greg Eden : Greg is the father of one of our junior members and runs our under 11 league team. He plays senior badminton at Southwell Centre Badminton Club in the Nottingham League and has recently become a Level 2 coach.

  • Peter Mills: Peter started playing badminton at SJBC and quickly progressed, representing Notts county and England from Under 13 – 19. In his final junior year he was the national U17 doubles and mixed champion, and runner-up at singles. At Under 19, Peter won the European Doubles title and won a European Team Gold medal at the same event. Peter has been playing Senior County matches since he was 15 and is now training full-time with the England squad at Milton Keynes. He returns to help whenever possible and is taking his Level 2 coaching Award.

  • Kate Fenton Like Peter, Kate started playing badminton at SJBC before moving on to the Notts Junior, and now the Notts Senior squads.  She is also a Level 1 coach.

  • Anne Butterworth: Anne has played league badminton for Southwell for many years and her three children were all members of SJBC.  She is a Part 1 coach and the club’s Child Protection Officer.

Several of our older members help out with younger players on Saturdays.

Guidance

We have three separate, hour-long, ‘sessions’, starting at 09.00-10.00hrs.  These are primarily split on ability but are balanced to ensure roughly equivalent numbers of members in each session.  Some weeks we have 3 hour long ‘Big Sessions’ where all members meet and play together.

Each session has time allocated for a warm-up, specific skill or tactic training, singles and doubles games, with ‘fun’ games to end with.  As time is limited it helps all concerned if your child arrives early for their session.  This will also helps avoid injury through lack of time for adequate warm-up.

Parents are welcome to stay and watch, or help.  Please let Alex. know if you are interested in assisting with the coaching, supervision, administration of the club or running the league teams.  Current, or ex-players, are particularly welcome, especially those with, or who are interested in, gaining coaching qualifications.

We are grateful that several parents do give their time to help; otherwise the club could not function

Matches

We are a league club and aim to run teams in the Notts Junior Badminton League at U11, U13, U15 & U17 age groups.  Home matches generally take place at Southwell Leisure Centre on Sunday afternoons and we encourage parents to come and support the teams.  It is essential that parents help to manage, and run, these teams otherwise matches could not take place.  Members are expected to play in matches if selected.

All members are expected to enter the club’s end of season singles tournament.  Other tournaments take place in the County throughout the season.  Coaches will advise those who they think should enter these tournaments to gain experience.

If any parents, or junior players, are interested in joining the adult clubs in Southwell contact Alex.

One to One Coaching

Additional coaching sessions on a one-to-one, or group basis can be arranged. Speak to Alex. if interested.
